Night lighting victim of budget cuts

Given state budget cuts Napa Valley College can no longer afford to keep its tennis court lights on for evening community recreational play. The lights will only be turned on for evening college tennis classes. New tennis court hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to dusk, and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The cost saving measure will save energy and also staff maintenance time.

“The decision to eliminate night lighting at the courts came from the budget blog suggestions to find cost savings across the college,” said Dr. Edna Baehre-Kolovani, college president.  “The college has lost $11 million in its budget since 2008-2009, and we are likely expecting another $600,000 to $750,000 in mid-year cuts starting January 2012. Unfortunately, we are not out of the woods yet in terms of further reductions in service.”

In addition, several sections of classes in Physical Education, including tennis, have been cut, as have sections in other areas across the curriculum. Tough decisions had to be made and “the highest priority was given to courses which students needed for transfer or degree completion,” adds Dr. Baehre-Kolovani. “The college used a priority matrix, developed with faculty, to make strategic decisions on which sections to cut so as not to affect the core mission of instruction.”
