Students new to Napa Valley College will find friendly faces and additional help when they register for fall classes. Guadalupe (Lupe) Garcia, Leonardo (Leo) Rosas, Rachel Sturm and Ruscal Cayangyang have been named Student Ambassadors at Napa Valley College. They will welcome new and prospective students and provide useful information to help ease new students into life at Napa Valley College, sharing first-hand information about the NVC experience. They have been stationed in the Admissions and Records area lobby as students come in to register for fall classes.
The ambassadors must be currently enrolled at Napa Valley College, have completed at least 12 units, must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher, and be enrolled in a minimum of nine units per semester (excluding summer).
Lupe Garcia is president of the Associated Students of Napa Valley College; the other ambassadors are also active in student government. Majoring in Bio-Psychology and Pre-Med, she plans to get her bachelor’s in Bio-Psychology and a master’s in Bio-Medical Engineering. The Napa native says, “I would like to start my own practice and incorporate physical, mental, and spiritual methods of healing.”
Leo Rosas is a Psychology major with plans to double major, but has not decided what the other major will be. His goal is to transfer to UC Berkeley or UCLA. A Napa resident, he serves within the ASNVC as a Legislative Advisor I representing NVC at the SSCCC (Student Senate for California Community Colleges) as the Associated Students' Region II representative.
Rachel Sturm is majoring in Environmental Science and planning on minoring in Statistics. She is Senator of Natural Science, the vice president of publications for Phi Theta Kappa honor society and a member of MESA. “I would really love to be able to transfer to Stanford University,” she says noting her goal is to get a Ph. D. in Environmental Science. Her hometown is Napa.
Ruscal Cayangyang, who says he is happy to be of service to Napa Valley College students as an ambassador, plans to earn an A.A. in Business Administration and hopes to transfer to a four- year university like Stanford. He serves as Legislative Advisor II for ASNVC. From Vallejo, he is also chairman and commissioner of the Youth Commission for the City of Vallejo.
The students completed 10-hours of Student Ambassador Training. Students who assume the role of Student Ambassador gain leadership experience and develop and improve public speaking skills.
