Greetings!

Dr. Edna BaehreWelcome to the President’s Blog. The Blog features items of special interest to the college and the public, including announcements of grants, large gifts and donations; special recognition of awards received by college faculty and staff; new program developments; developing budget issues; and hopefully many “happy announcements”. College Awarded $3.94 million grant -- The President's Office is pleased to announce that NVC received confirmation this morning that we were successful in our application for a Hispanic Serving Institution Science Technology Engineering and Math (HSI STEM) and Articulation grant. This federal grant is valued at nearly $790,000 per year for five years – a total of $3.94 million dollars!

Trefethen Family Vineyards 125th Birthday Event, September 25 -- The winery celebrated their 125th anniversary and selected NVC’s Viticulture & Winery Technology program as their event beneficiary this year. President Baehre-Kolovani, Program Coordinator Steve Krebs, Instructor Bryan Avila, Instructional Assistant Greg Siewert, Trustee Michael Baldini, Trustee Bruce Ketron, Vice President of Instruction Sue Nelson, Vineyard Assistant Tom Muscatine, Past President Armond Phillips and his lovely wife Winnie, Foundation board member Dennis Pedisich, Foundation Assistant Kathy Baird, and about twenty VWT students volunteered at the Trefethen Family Vineyards 125th Birthday Event and Parade on September 25, 2011.

Assessment News - Assessment Budget Augmentation --  In keeping with the critical focus of NVC on Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) Assessment, the president and Judie Walter-Burke, Dean of Research Planning & Institutional Effectiveness, have worked together to develop a budget that includes funds for staff development for both faculty and staff involved in SLO assessment efforts. Funding has been set aside for both training and attendance at conferences. A presentation by the co-chairs of the Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee, Eileene Tejada and Robyn Wornall, and Stephanie Burns, the Faculty SLO Assessment Coordinator, to the Board of Trustees is tentatively set for November 3, 2011.

IT Update -- NVC’s Information Technology department has begun developing a plan to improve service and functionality related to technology on campus, both in and out of the classroom, including web services and online registration. A survey regarding Datatel and WebAdvisor experiences was recently distributed to students, staff, and faculty. Results will be shared with the college’s technology committee and other shared governance committees to assess needs and further the improvement plan development process. The Board of Trustees has requested a presentation on the multi-year improvement plan prior to address this institutional priority. UPDATE - 2/22/12 -- The first year of a three year roadmap to improvement was funded through Board Action. More to follow on the improvment implementation timeline.

Napa Valley College SACNAS Chapter Recognized As Top-8 In Nation -- MESA Student Organization Wins national recognition -- to receive one of eight 2011 Role Model Chapter Awards.

First Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees Honored -- The late Glenn (Pop) DuBose, the late Robert (Bob) Steen, Frank Humpert, Warren Brusstar, Jim Hard, Scott Buss, and Todd Pridy have been selected to be inducted into the first Napa Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Values Project Comes to NVC -- The Values Project is a new, public art project in Napa, CA that stimulates dialogue and thought by stenciling basic human values, like “Integrity”, "Tolerance" and "Respect" in unexpected places in the public sphere: in front of parking spaces in parking lots.
